Statement of Killala Diocesan Finances 31 December, 2009
Each diocese in the country contributes to the work of the Bishops Conference and its Agencies. The sum paid by the diocese of Killala increased by €12,000 this year. This was due, mainly, to increased costs in the provision of support for the work of the Conference in areas such as the National Office for Safeguarding Children, initiatives for the survivors of abuse, as well as the many other commitments in areas such as education etc.

Thank God, we now have two seminarians in Rome studying to be priests of this diocese and one priest doing further studies in the United States. The cost of the education of priests and seminarians increased last year by €70,000. This was due to an increase in the number of seminarians as well as increases in the fees charged by the seminaries and universities.

A new cemetery in the Cathedral grounds, in which former bishops and priests of the diocese are now interred, has been completed at a cost of €33,894 to the diocese. Restoration to the College Chapel in St Muredach’s College also cost €8,830.

The diocese has a number of funds, which are listed on page 2. The Sick and Retired Priests Fund provides for the accommodation and support of ten retired priests. The Brazil Mission Account funds our diocesan mission there. The other funds continue to provide an offset for parishes which have bank loans. These loans total €1,465.000 at present. By reducing the interest on the debt on the many churches renovated in this diocese in recent years, the capital is paid off more quickly. The Central Priests Revenue makes provision for the support of priests in parishes which fail to provide fully for the salaries of the priests. All of these are working funds held in current accounts. The Diocese of Killala Fund contains monies which were accumulated in the past and forms a capital reserve.

I am most grateful to you for this support. I am hopeful that, with your continued support and generosity, the diocese will be able to meet with the many pressing pastoral needs of this time.

With every best wish,

Yours sincerely,

+John Fleming

Bishop of Killala
